61 Baynard Park Road Sea Pines Plantation Hilton Head

This elegant home enjoys one of the most beautiful Lowcountry settings in Sea Pines overlooking Calibogue Sound in Sea Pines Plantation. Deepwater views abound with eternal sunsets from almost every room. As you enter the oyster shell and brick driveway, you see that this lovely home is situated on a gentle rise on the highest ground on the south end of Hilton Head. The 120 foot-wide propery gains extra privacy from the wooded 11-acre historic Baynard Ruins across the street and from the back of the home you are greeted by sweeping vistas from South Beach to Harbour Town.  A winding creek full of trout and red fish borders the edge of the back lawn – attracting pelicans, osprey, and belted kingfishers. Dramatic sunsets grace the view as you look west through live oaks and palmettos across Calibogue Sound to Daufuskie Island.

An open floor plan with great flexibility is one of the hallmarks of this home. As you enter the front door you are surrounded by natural light from the dormers and skylights in the two-story foyer and living room. A stone floor entry leads you to a large living room with French doors and windows that open across the view. A tall, elegant wood-burning stone fireplace stands to the left. The large oyster shell and brick trimmed porch stretches across the length of the house and has covered areas on both ends allowing generous space for entertaining and enjoying the spectacular views.

Wide hallways and antique heart pine floors connect the large, light-filled spaces throughout the downstairs. Comfortable living and gracious entertaining are enjoyed in the family room and open kitchen.  Large windows wrap two sides of the family room with the third wall containing bookshelves, storage cabinets, a media cabinet, and Savannah brick wood-burning fireplace.

The chef’s kitchen is a cook’s dream.  A large sub-zero refrigerator/freezer, Viking gas range, Viking electric oven, Viking microwave, warming drawer, two Fisher-Paykel dishwashers, a deep double sink, a separate vegetable prep sink, and multiple storage drawers and cabinets provide all the convenience and efficiency one could want, including a desk/workstation and china cabinets and cutlery drawers. Black granite, mahogany, and stainless steel counter tops add to the functionality of the work spaces.

In addition to the kitchen amenities, there is a full butler’s pantry with a Kitchen Aid dishwasher, Fisher-Paykel refrigerator/freezer, sink with disposal, and multiple shelves and cabinets.  Leading from the kitchen to the separate dining room is a walk-through bar with a copper sink and under-counter refrigerator/ice maker.  Black granite counter tops and glass front cabinets create a handsome space for displaying crystal and silver.

The separate dining room features a bay window that lets in natural light and looks out on native vegetation. Elegant columns create a subtle division from the generous entry and hallway spaces beyond.  A large powder room with handcrafted stone and wrought iron sink is conveniently located off the foyer – close to the dining, kitchen, family, and living rooms.

A spacious laundry room with Maytag high energy washer and dryer, deep porcelain sink, two closets, a full-length hanging rod, multiple drawers and cabinets has easy access to the rooms downstairs.

The master wing comprises a large master bedroom with tall windows across the view and French doors that lead out to a covered porch. Adjacent to the bedroom is a huge light-filled his-and-hers dressing area and baths. The lady’s area features a huge walk-in closet, Jacuzzi bathtub, separate toilet room, vanity with large sink and two stone counter tops. The gentleman’s area has a stone counter top vanity with large sink, separate toilet room, and separate walk-in closet. A large stone walk-in shower room with multiple shower heads separates her area from his and is accessed with entries from both sides. The common dressing area has large drawers and cabinets with a wall-sized mirror with natural light from a large skylight overhead.

A handsome den/office is located off the master suite. It is accessed from the front hall, as well as from the master dressing area. It has warm wood trim and floors and a Savannah brick wood-burning fireplace flanked by cabinets and bookshelves.  Two large floor-to-ceiling bookshelves add to the ambience. A wide bay window enjoys a view of the wooded historic Baynard Ruins.

The upstairs features three large bedrooms with full baths, as well as a full suite above the garage – all with great separation for privacy. All bedrooms have high ceilings and lots of windows to let in light and take in views of Calibogue Sound, Daufuskie Island, and the wooded Baynard Ruins.

The upstairs “second master” bedroom opens out to a sitting porch on the Calibogue Sound view. It has a huge tiled bathroom with Jacuzzi tub, walk-in glass shower, and double vanity with bowl sinks, pendant lighting, and hanging mirrors. There is a large walk-in closet plus an additional closet with shoe storage.

A floating bridged hallway connects to the other separate bedroom area. This bedroom also opens onto a porch on the view. It has a generously-sized full bath with walk-in glass shower, separate walk-in closet, and linen closet.

The third upstairs bedroom features windows that look out to the Sound and into the treetops. A charming bead board-trimmed bath has a sink vanity space, walk-in closet and separate tub/shower and toilet room.

The large bonus room is located above the garage and is accessed by the staircase hall leading to the upstairs. It has a full bath with walk-in glass shower and stone vanity and floors. It also includes a large walk-in closet. This room is surrounded by windows and features a high tray ceiling.  It is wired for media and surround sound making it a perfect office, exercise room, project room, media room, game room or bedroom suite.

Extra amenities upstairs include a sitting/work area with coffee station, sink, and mini-refrigerator for the convenience of guests.  In addition, there are two large walk-in storage closets, small laundry room, and large walk-in attic storage space.

The two and a half car garage has generous space for storage including a large walk-in closet, a separate half bath, and drying yard with outdoor shower. The garage is connected to the house by a hallway that opens into the back hall of the home near the laundry room and stairway to the upstairs making it convenient for family and guests.

This beautiful home was designed by, well-known Hilton Head Architect, Neil Gordon for Hester and Bob Hodde. Bob has been coming to Hilton Head since 1961 since his family visited from Summit, NJ to vacation in Sea Pines. They bought property in Sea Pines that same year. While in high school and college Bob worked for Sea Pines Company during the summers and became enthusiastic about the real estate business while working for Charles Fraser and Sea Pines Real Estate in his college years. For more than 40 years, Bob has watched the island grow and mature into the wonderful resort destination it is today. Homes and real estate are Bob’s passion and that shows in the meticulous design and architectural details of this home. Bob, along with interior designer, Liz MacLeod, oversaw every element that was chosen for the house and wanted it to reflect the best of what the market wants today – a home that is spacious but liveable, elegant but functional, and view-oriented with privacy.

Hester came to Hilton Head from Charlotte, NC after marrying Bob in 1983. She works for Outside Hilton Head’s Destination Management division and assists Bob in his real estate business. Hester says the home’s flexibility is one of its greatest features. She likes to entertain family and friends – in groups large and small. The kitchen is fabulous for cooking a dinner for six or for a caterer to a serve a cocktail party for 80. All the rooms downstairs have great flow with multiple doors out to the porch and view.  She loves the excellent separation of spaces that allows for the house to be extremely liveable – whether there are two people in residence or twelve! When it’s only Hester and Bob, the house lives like a one-story home with everything they need and use close by.  When all the bedrooms are full upstairs, everyone enjoys privacy in their separate bedroom and living spaces. It is a fantastic house for raising a family or for entertaining guests.

But if you ask Hester what her favorite aspect of this house is, she will say that, even though the house itself is terrific, it’s the setting and view that are the most incredible part of living there. The sunsets and changing weather, the marsh grass colors and the boats going by, the sunlight reflecting off the water and the abundant wildlife are spectacular to watch. She says she “doesn’t take it for granted for one minute!” Courtesy Hodde Real Estate
